Fort Carson and South Colorado Springs Hail: What to Check After the Latest Storms

Colorado Springs does not get one hail day and then go quiet. Fort Carson, Fountain, Security-Widefield, Stratmoor, and south Colorado Springs took storms on August 16 and again on September 22.

On August 16, warnings covered Fort Carson and the south side with hail large enough to dent vehicles. On September 22 around 5:30 p.m., a severe thunderstorm sat over southern Colorado Springs. Spotters reported quarter-size hail. The warned area included Fort Carson, Fountain, Security-Widefield, Stratmoor, Cimarron Hills, and Peterson Space Force Base.

If your car was outside during either of those cells, look at it in daylight before you assume you got lucky.

What to look at

Hail dents are easy to miss in a parking garage or at night. Walk the vehicle in open light and look across the panel, not straight down at it.

• Roof
• Hood
• Trunk lid
• Top of the fenders
• Mirrors and windshield

Small, round dimples are the usual pattern. One or two can hide until the sun hits the paint at an angle. Glass chips and cracked windshields count too.

You can choose the shop

If you have comprehensive coverage, hail is usually a comprehensive claim. You are not required to use the shop the insurance company names first. Get the estimate here, then decide.

What to do this week

1. Photograph the vehicle in good light. Hood, roof, trunk, and any glass.
2. Come in for a free estimate. You can open the claim after you know what you are looking at.
